Description

Context

Today, with market globalization, standards are as numerous as they are invisible. What are they for? Why should you care? There are as many questions as there are answers. Governments around the world are increasingly investing in standardization and using standards to gain strategic economic advantage. In fact, research shows that in Canada between 1981 and 2019, standardization accounted for 17.4% of GDP growth and 38.4% of labour productivity growth. In 2019 alone, the growth of standardization’s contribution to the overall increase in GDP, which was $33.7 billion CAD, reached $5.86 billion.

Despite this telling performance, the immense economic potential of standardization strategies for companies and the state, as well as the important contribution of standards to the global and national economy, remains unknown and rarely taught.
